Carnes was indicted for stealing from the Southern Baptist Mission Board. "While in Milwaukee it is reported that he went under the name of Frank J. Lewis, by which he was known here [Winnipeg]. Later he is said to have spent a few days fishing at Star Lake, Wisconsin."
