Paul Bunyan

Several authors have placed the prime source of the Paul Bunyan stories in the area around Rhinelander. In particular, it has been suggested that they may either have originated with Gene Shepard or that he was one of the early retellers of some of the stories. The stories, of course, have multiple sources; the real question is who first attached the name of Paul Bunyan to either a new or retold story? Gene Shepard is a possible answer, though it will never be proved. Read more details in the sources listed in the Bibliography.
