Civilian Conservation Corps: CCC
There were two CCC camps near Star Lake, and both had the name Star Lake attached to them. The camp that we usually think of as the Star Lake CCC camp was on Highway N, just opposite to the campground and boat landing. It extended to both sides of the road. There is some evidence in the area that there was a CCC camp there--mainly concrete foundations.
The CCC camp on White Sand Lake, where the Boy Scouts had a Canoe Base for years, was originally supposed to be at Crystal Lake (with an address of Star Lake), but was moved before it was built or opened to the White Sand Lake location. This article will focus on the camp off Highway N.
This was the 650th Co. It was commanded by 1st Lt. J. A. Rathje (spelling uncertan) and later by Capt. J. L. Murphy, 2nd Infantry.
The National Archives contains inspection reports of the camp, and these give some insight to life in the camp. These are cited in the bibliograpy--click the link above.
